Does SAP offer a free trial of Crystal Reports?

Yes. SAP offers a 30-day trial of SAP Crystal Reports, the report designer, through the "try now" section of its Crystal Reports product page. SAP also offers two free downloads that are not trials: a free Crystal Reports Viewer for opening saved reports, and free Crystal Reports editions for Visual Studio and Eclipse developers. If you only need to open, refresh, and deliver reports rather than design them, you may not need the designer trial at all. A few details are worth knowing before you start the SAP trial. SAP's own Crystal Reports FAQ describes it as a 30-day trial and lists SAP Crystal Reports 2025 (64-bit) as the current release. Which version the trial link delivers has not always matched that: when Crystal Reports 2025 launched, an independent Crystal Reports expert reported that only 2020 and 2016 trials were available. Check the version you are offered. SAP's downloads page notes that trial and production installs are the same software, and that you convert a trial by entering a production license keycode. SAP Crystal Server, its web-portal product, has a separate 60-day trial.

What free SAP options exist?

"SAP Crystal Solutions" is SAP's umbrella name for Crystal Reports and Crystal Server, and its community pages are where the downloads live. Two of those downloads are free:

• SAP Crystal Reports Viewer. A free desktop application for opening reports saved with data. You can search, drill down, print, and export, but you cannot refresh the data. SAP supports the current and one previous viewer version, and older versions such as 2016 are no longer available. • SAP Crystal Reports for Visual Studio (.NET) and for Eclipse (Java). Free add-ons for developers who embed reporting into their own applications, downloaded after a free SAP registration. This is what people usually mean by "SAP Crystal Reports version for Eclipse free trial": it is a developer tool, not a report viewer for someone who receives an .rpt file. SAP sets licensing terms for distributing the runtime, so read them before you ship an application.

What about a trial for just viewing reports?

The free SAP viewer covers one case well: reports that arrive with saved data. It answers "what did this report say when it was run?" It does not answer "what does this report say right now?" If the numbers need to be current, you need a viewer that can connect to the data source, log on, apply parameters, and refresh. Delivery is the other gap, because reading a report is often only the first step before it has to reach someone else in the right format.
